Vaginal Discharge

Some vaginal discharge is normal. The color and consistency of discharge can change throughout your monthly cycle. Concerning vaginal discharge is a symptom that requires evaluation to determine its cause. 

Several conditions may result in vaginal discharge. These include:

  • Yeast infection
  • STI’s
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Forgotten tampon
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Cervical cancer
  • Pregnancy
  • Vaginal cancer

You should see a healthcare provider if you experience the following:

  • Green, yellow, thick, or cottage-cheese like discharge
  • Foul-smelling discharge
  • Redness, itching, or burning in the vaginal area
  • Non-menstrual spotting or bleeding

Vaginal discharge will be evaluated during a pelvic exam. Your provider may take culture swabs to check for infection. After an examination to determine the cause of your discharge, treatment recommendations will be made.
